There has never been a time Rosalie enjoyed the nights more than since she spends them with Bella. She loves to hear her breath, listen to the soft sounds of her snoring, watch how her body relaxes when she drifts off to sleep.
At one point, when she’s sleeping deep enough, Rosalie rests her head on Bella’s chest, hearing the rate of her heart beat and how the blood rushes through her veins. It is the sweetest music she can think of: the music of life.
And the vampire knows that she will never let anyone take that away from her. She’s been hiding for years now, more than she can count, always taking Bella with her, shielding her from the real world, watching every day how she is human, stays human. Her hair turns silver, she gets wrinkles, and Rosalie ravels in every second of the aging process, keeps a close eye on the woman not to miss anything.
“Rosalie, please,” Bella says one day, when her breathing is uneven and her heart very weak. “You have to turn me … if you love me, please …”
Rosalie can see that it costs Bella very much strength to speak.
“No, my dear. I won’t turn you, because I love you. Your human-self. I couldn’t bear it if you were immortal. And now die, my sweetheart … just die.”
And this Bella does under the observant eye of the vampiress.
