We are two in a million
They look at each other across the room and know right away that they are different than the other people here (and that’s not because they are the only two women in this business class). They look into each other's eyes and see an old soul, a knowing soul, a wisdom that’s not from this world but from another, and they eradiate this being-different like a beacon.
Susan smiles, and Alice laughs.

They stand together in a cold autumn breeze, red leaves dance around them forming like a veil to separate them from the rest of the world. Susan watches Alice smoking a cigarette and wonders at the amount of smoke the other woman exhales (normally there is less, she’s quite sure).
“So,” Alice says finally. “People think you’re just as strange as me … I can feel it.”
Susan raises an eyebrow, amused. “Well, I’d have said it a little less bluntly.”
Alice huffs. “Please. I think we’re past this, aren’t we?”
Susan looks into Alice’s eyes again and sees the things she doesn’t say: She’s tired of being judged, of being ‘the strange one’ just because her view of this world is different, because she has other goals than her average acquaintances. Just like Susan herself, she wants to have somebody who finally understands (and feels the same).
So Susan simply nods and relaxes her posture. “We are.”

It's a crazy world
~~~
Sometimes they wonder what makes this world more real than theirs …
~~~
Alice watches when Susan is lost in a book or in her thoughts, waits for the moment she forgets to be the girl in the real world and becomes Queen Susan the Gentle. Her posture changes as well as her facial expression, and if there happens to be a cup of tea in reach, Alice notices in awe that even Susan’s gestures become more royal. The way she bends forward, the way she reaches out, the way she takes hold of the cup …
And then the blonde can only wonder why anyone would tell Susan that her stories about Narnia are not real, how anyone can deny that this graceful woman was once (and still is in a way) a Queen.
~~~
Susan smiles knowingly when they are in a meeting and Alice forgets the business woman in a heated argument and becomes the fighter she has once been. Her blue eyes are unyielding and her voice won’t allow any opposition, she knows what she wants and knows how to get it and in which way things are going to happen. It’s not hard for Susan to imagine Alice in a shining armor with a splendid sword in her hand to fight for what’s right, to defend what is important to her and not take a single step back.
So why had other people (who also see Alice like this) trouble believing?
One minute you’re up,
and the next thing you're breakin'
„It’s been a hard time,“ Alice starts with a soft voice, the sad tone not fitting her usual bright personality. “Returning from Wonderland I knew that I was meant for more, that I was different, that I could achieve anything … But nobody would listen. They’d call me crazy, a mental, told me to see a doctor and get my head fixed …”
Susan doesn’t dare to make a sound to interrupt Alice during this peculiar confession. She just keeps their fingers entwined and strokes the back of Alice’s hand in a soothing motion, letting her know she’s not alone anymore.
“I didn’t know what else to do. I couldn’t take it anymore, was sick and tired … Until I thought this was the only way out.”
Susan sighs, raises their hands, turns them and kisses the pale scar on Alice’s wrist tenderly.
“But in a way I’m happy I did it. I’m happy I survived it, because it opened my eyes. It doesn’t matter what people think of me, it doesn’t matter they think I’m a failure, because now I know that I want to live, and I want to thrive, and I want to be successful just to shove it into their faces.”
Susan smiles when Alice speaks faster and louder, determined and resolute.
“And with your wits and charm it’s going to be even easier,” the blonde continues with a little laugh and kisses Susan’s forehead. “I’m really glad I met you.”
“Me, too,” Susan answers sincerely.
